HOW DOES CBD HELP PEOPLE SUFFERING FROM DIABETES?
For 2,000 years, diabetes has been recognized as a very devastating and really deadly disease. The first known mention of this disease was in 1552 B.C when Hesy-Ra an Egyptian physician documented frequent urination as a symptom of a real mysterious disease that also caused emaciation- which is the state of being abnormally weak or thin. Around the same time, ancient healers noted that ants would be attracted to the urine from people who had diabetes.
In 150 A.D a Greek physician named Arateus described what we call diabetes as "the melting down of flesh and limbs into urine." From that day on, physicians began to understand a lot more about the disease.
As physicians learned more about diabetes, they began to understand how it could be better managed. When they tried the very first diabetes treatment, it involved prescribed exercise, often riding horses which was believed to relieve excessive urination.
WHAT IS CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the many different compounds found in the cannabis plant, known as cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are really unique because they act on cannabinoid receptors that are part of the endocannabinoid system found throughout the human body.
TYPES OF DIABETES
When it comes to people who suffer from Type 1 diabetes, (which only makes up to 5% of the diabetic population) your body is no longer able to produce insulin which is the major key hormone that is needed to transfer glucose molecules from the bloodstream into cells. This generally due to an autoimmune attack on the pancreas.
Type 2 diabetes is more of a complex form of the disease in the body that still produces insulin but it either don't produce enough of it or your cells become resistant to it's physiological pathways. Also type 2 diabetes is estimated to affect over 400 million people worldwide roughly between 90-95% of the total diabetic population.
CAN CBD CURE DIABETES?
Probably not, BUT results from animal model studies have indicated it may be able to decrease the incidence of the disease through an immunomodulatory mechanism.
So with that being said there is no stretch to say that therapeutic properties of CBD may be able to help with secondary symptoms.
As we said earlier evidence can only go so far. Regardless of the fact that many diabetics use CBD everyday to help manage their condition, most physicians are still a little wary to recommend the supplement as a treatment because they can't really point out the exact reasons as to why it's beneficial.
Dr. Raphael Mechoulam is a research scientist from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem speaks about the fact that naturally occurring CBD receptors occur throughout the body from the brain and nervous tissues to organs and immune cells. One of the organs where he has found the receptors to be prevalent is the pancreas.
He quoted "Naturally-occurring CBD receptors occur throughout the human body: in the brain, nervous system, and crucially for sufferers of diabetes- in the islet cells of the pancreas."
The endocannabinoid receptors have been found in the organs islet cells, the exact location where insulin is produced. It has been suggested that the stimulus of these receptors in the islet cells may be linked to insulin production.
Regardless of how intriguing the research is, by no means we are saying that endocannabinoid receptors are directly responsible for the production of insulin, or that CBD is a cure for diabetes. While the receptors may play a crucial role in the production of insulin, a lot more research needs to be worked on and done in order to pinpoint the physiological mechanisms and the exact pathways that are responsible for doing so.
CAN CBD HELP UNDERLYING SYMPTOMS?
One of the most common factors with the development of insulin in Type 2 diabetes would be chronic inflammation that is related to obesity. Having lots of fatty tissues in obese Type 2 diabetics drastically limits the glucose metabolism, which results in high levels of sugar building up in your bloodstream. One of the main benefits you can receive from CBD is the anti-inflammatory properties of the supplement. It has been known to directly combat glucose metabolic disorders and help improve overall metabolism.
Another condition that is commonly associated with diabetes is Nerve damage. Consuming CBD has been shown to reduce infarcts (areas of dead tissue due to lack of blood flow) up to 30%.
The medical potential and therapeutic benefits of CBD oil for diabetes is phenomenal and that many diabetics use this amazing supplement on a daily basis to treat the disease and help improve their overall life. More will continue to take CBD in the future in light of increased research and improved reliable information.
CBD is not a guaranteed supplement that can cure diabetes, even though some patients have found it highly therapeutic, it will ultimately be a lot more beneficial for some individuals than others. As is always the case, please consults your doctor or physician prior to using any CBD infused products.
