Cannabis Dosing

What you will find on this page is meant to be a guideline, a starting point of reference.

Important Things to Know About CBD Oil Dosages

1) Every Person is Different and May Require a Different Dosage

If you’ve been following the articles on our site, then you have probably heard of the endocannabinoid system. This is a unique system in our body that’s responsible for improvement and maintenance of our mental and physical health. CBD can help to regulate that system by binding with different receptors located within that system. Those receptors are referred to as CB1 and CB2. The endocannabinoid system is extremely complex and far from understood, leaving researchers trying to determine whether or not the CBD directly or indirectly effects those receptors and exactly what role they play in affecting ones’ health.

While the exact way they effect our system still remains a mystery to most researchers, what we do know is that every person has a different endocannabinoid system, and therefore while the instructions on a CBD oils’ bottle may be informative and clear, the standard dosing may affect two different people in completely different ways.

2) Genetics, Tolerance and General Health

If you accept the fact that everyone is different, then you can understand that everyone has his/her own genetics, tolerance, and general health. There are those that suffer from severe debilitating conditions and others that are only looking to cure their day to day anxiety. Each person has their own reasons and genetics, tolerance and general health, definitely, come into play. It cannot be expected that someone who is in the prime of their game, from a health perspective, will require the same dosage as someone who has severe medical issues.

3) It’s Not a Miracle Cure

Whether the right dosage of CBD will work for your body or not, it’s important to understand that CBD oil is not a miracle cure. Don’t expect to take a few drops and, Voilà, you’re cured. The effects of CBD oil are not instant, and people constantly make the same mistake. They use CBD for a short period, expecting it to cure them instantly, and when it doesn’t work, they complain, asking for a refund. CBD can take time to work and similar to your health issues, it won’t happen overnight. The key is finding the right dosage.

The Standard CBD Oil Dosage Manual

Now, remember, this guide is a general one, and it is extremely important to read the dosage instructions on the CBD oil you are taking. Furthermore, it is always best to contact the CBD oil company to ask them the right dosage for your medical condition. With that said, there are a few common dosage guidelines:

  1. Start by taking one drop on the first day. It’s important to see how you feel as everyone reacts differently. It may even cause you irritation, and therefore it’s important to stop.
  2. If all goes well, increase the amount to 2 drops per day for the first 3-4 weeks. This is the testing period to see if it is helping any of your symptoms.
  3. Spread the drops throughout the day. For example, take one in the morning and one in the evening.
  4. If you don’t experience any change, then increase at a slow rate and see how you feel. With each person, it is a question of finding the right dosage.

How Much CBD Oil Should I Take?

1. Increase Appetite In Cancer Patients

With cancer rates on the rise, so are the risks of chemotherapy. For patients who use chemo "therapy" as a means to combat cancer, a lost of appetite is a common side effect. This comes from chemo damaging cells and DNA, causing nausea, excessive vomiting, low energy, and the ECS to reduce appetite. CBD promotes appetite and gives cancer patients a desire to indulge in food, promoting proper nourishment and increasing the patient’s arsenal to combat illness.

Optimal CBD Oil Dosage: 2.5 mg of THC by mouth with or without 1 mg of CBD daily for six weeks

2. Alleviate Chronic Pain

More than 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, all onset for different reasons. Pain can manifest in joints, muscles, organs, body cavities, bones, and ligaments; at times triggered by diseases such as Crohn's, ulcerative colitis, Lyme disease, multiple sclerosis, and fibromyalgia.

Chronic diseases can be crippling and the associated pain can leave patients incapacitated and unable to function when flare-ups occur. Research shows that CBD can support healthy joint, muscle, and organ function and bring pain relief. By acting on the ECS, CBD impacts nociceptive pathways to significantly reduce inflammation — a leading cause of disease and chronic pain — and inhibit pain.

Optimal CBD Oil Dosage: Sublingual ingestion of 2.5-20 mg CBD for an average of 25 days. Benefits are cumulative.

3. Offer Relief In Epilepsy

In 2015, a study in American Academy of Neurology provided the lab results of 137 seizure sufferers who used the FDA approved drug Epidiolex — a pharmaceutical oil-based extract of CBD. Ages ranged from two to 26 and provided the following results:

  • Seizures decreased by an average of 54 percent in 137 people who completed 12 weeks on Epidiolex.
  • Patients who had Dravet Syndrome (DS) responded more positively with a 63 percent decrease in seizures over 3 months.
  • In 27 patients with atonic seizures (which are commonly seen in people with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS) as well as other types of epilepsy), the atonic seizures decreased by 66.7 percent on average.

Optimal CBD Oil Dosage: Sublingual ingestion of 200-300 mg of CBD daily for up to 4 1/2 months

4. Treat Movement Problems Associated With Huntington’s Disease

Huntington’s disease is an inherited central nervous system disorder that causes a degeneration of nerve cells in the brain. Poor coordination, limited function abilities, and jerky, random, and uncontrollable movements are common manifestations.

Through acting on CB1 and CB2 receptors, CBD slows the progression of neurodegeneration in Huntington’s disease. This is accomplished by limiting toxicity in microglial cells and suppressing inflammation to promote therapeutic relief in joints and muscles. This alleviates hyper-kinetic symptoms and works as a neuroprotector in degenerative diseases like Huntington’s disease.

Optimal CBD Oil Dosage: Sublingual ingestion of 10 mg of CBD per 1 lb of weight, daily for six weeks

5. Regulate Sleep Disorders

Americans average 6.9 hours of sleep every night. Combine that with an inability to nap during the daytime due to work, long commutes, constant blue lights from when we wake until we fall asleep with our phones in our hands, and we’re leaning towards a health disaster. Sleep disorders range from insomnia — 70 million sufferers in the US alone, narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, and delayed sleep phase syndrome.

Research shows CBD to be effective in treating sleep related issues. A 2015 study showed CBD’s ability to reduce nightmares in military personnel suffering from PTSD. CBD’s ability to act on the ECS may allow it to work with the body’s internal clock also.

Also, one study showed that when CBD was consumed with the lights on, it effectively increased alertness — well needed to to fight symptoms of sleep deprivation. Another study in 2013 showed that CBD was able to increase total sleep time in adult male rats during the night time.

Optimal CBD Oil Dosage: Sublingual ingestion of 40-160 mg of CBD daily

6. Minimize Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms

Multiple Sclerosis is a neurodegenerative autoimmune disease that affects the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerve. This leads to all sorts of health issues including vision loss, chronic pain, fatigue, and impaired coordination.

Compounds like non-psychoactive CBD deactivate the immune system, halting the violent assault on the central nervous system. When the immune system is calmed down, it no longer attacks your central nervous system.

Optimal CBD Oil Dosage: Cannabis plant extracts containing 2.5-120 mg of a THC-CBD combination by mouth daily for 2-15 weeks. An oral spray might contain 2.7 mg of THC and 2.5 mg of CBD at doses of 2.5-120 mg for up to eight weeks. Patients typically use eight sprays within any three hours, with a maximum of 48 sprays in any 24-hour period.

7. Help Manage Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that inhibits clear thinking, communication, and the expression of emotion. Research suggests CBD offers anti-psychotic effects because it activates the CB2 receptors of the ECS. This helps modulate the body's immune system, reducing and significantly lowering psychotic symptoms.

Optimal CBD Oil Dosage: Sublingual ingestion of 40-1,280 mg CBD daily, for up to four weeks

8. Provide Relief In Glaucoma

Glaucoma occurs when fluid build-up in the front of the eye, increasing eye pressure and damaging the optic nerve. Over three million Americans have glaucoma, with only 50 percent aware of their condition.

A 2003 study suggests the neuroprotection CBD provides decreases the intensity of peroxynitrite — an ion that can damage molecules in cells, including DNA, and proteins and an agent that causes glaucoma.

Optimal CBD Oil Dosage: Sublingual ingestion of a single dose of 20-40 mg under the tongue. Doses greater than 40 mg may actually increase eye pressure.

CBD Oil Dosage Recap

If you are just starting out with CBD oil, then remember to start small. According to CannLabs, the nation’s top full-service testing lab for cannabis products, there is no established lethal CBD dose. Therefore be cautious and as with any new health products, it’s important to know how your body reacts to CBD. Always read product inserts carefully to ensure they are taking the right amount of CBD, and talk to your physician about any questions or concerns. Increase the dosage gradually and if you feel that the CBD oil isn’t affecting you in a positive way then consult with a medical professional.
